Gürgan IVF Centers | Ankara | İstanbul | Ivf Support > What is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome OHSS?

WHAT IS OVARIAN HYPERSTIMULATION SYNDROME (OHSS)?

Ovarian stimulation is an important stage of IVF treatment and used hormone drugs to stimulate the ovaries in this process. Overstimulating the ovaries can cause to develop too many eggs and this is called as OHSS. Actually it is a side effect of overstimulation. OHSS is seen in three ways, mild, moderate and severe. Mild or moderate OHSS is common in 30-40% of patients who undergo infertility treatment. Patients shouldn’t be worried about OHSS. Mild and moderate forms can easily be treated. If patient has severe symptoms, it is better to stay at hospital. You may get further information from IVF Support Turkey team.

HOW IS OHSS TREATED?

OHSS occurs within 3 to 16 days after ovary stimulating injection is used. Developing eggs after overstimulation may cause pain in the lower abdomen. Mild and moderate patients are asked to refrain from excessive physical activity and sexual intercourse for a certain period of time. Pain will be reduced as patient relax and be careful about nutrition and hydration. In case of no pregnancy, the severity of the pain decreases spontaneously. If pregnancy occurs, pain will reduce gradually and won’t cause any negative effect for baby. Severe OHSS patients should be observed at hospital. If necessary, hydration support will be provided to patients.

OHSS DURING IVF TREATMENT

There are various treatment methods to prevent OHSS. In the first visit, doctors determine severity of OHSS by the symptoms. If you develop mild and moderate OHSS, you may experience abdominal pain, swelling, tenderness, nausea. If you have difficulty breathing, vomiting, swelling and severe abdominal pain, you may have severe OHSS. You need to visit emergency departments or your fertility doctor immediately.

WHO IS AT RISK OF OHSS?

OHSS happen when patient have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, low or high ovarian reserve, young and weak people, and who experienced OHSS in advance. In these conditions OHSS is more likely to be seen.

DOES OHSS CASES ARE PREVENTABLE?

WHAT TO DO TO PREVENT OHSS?

The first step in the OHSS should be diagnosing the patient’s problem and offering the personalized treatment plan. The patient’s ovarian reserve, body-mass index, a variety of hormone levels will be evaluated to reduce the possible side effects of the treatment.

If you have a high risk of developing OHSS, your fertility specialist will adjust your treatment. Ovarian stimulation can be provided with GnRH analog instead of HCG. If OHSS occurs, by drawing a vein path fluid and protein supplement can be made. The Paracentesis method can be used in the advanced OHSS.

If your fertility doctor suspects that you are at risk of having severe OHSS, it may be risky to complete IVF treatment. Embryo transfer that is the last step of the treatment can be postponed to an advanced date. Doctors may recommend freezing embryos and transferring them when OHSS isn’t a risk anymore.

It is really important to choose the right center and doctor for your treatment. Experts and successful embryologists can help to minimize the side effects of the treatments.
